MinnPost - Creationism 'alive and well' in Minnesota biology classes

Monday's New York Times carried a story about the number of high-school biology teachers who teach creationism. Apparently, just 28 percent consistently teach evolution, according to a new report.

Shocking though that figure was, it didn't stun me nearly as much as the quote a little ways into the story from University of Minnesota biology professor Randy Moore, who among other things asserted that at least 25 percent of Minnesota high-school teachers teach creationism.

If a fourth of our kids are being taught this, why isn’t it common knowledge? Because the creation story being told is the Christian one that’s prevalent in this country, Moore suggested, so lots of kids barely notice and lots of parents aren’t offended.

I'm offended. My kid is only 3 but if I find out when he's older he's been taught Creationism in science you can bet I'll sue that teacher and try to get him kicked out. It's unconscionable. WOW!

Glad to hear that there are parents out there who do care and who will be paying attention to this stuff. :)

My girlfriend is Catholic and I'm Agnostic and before we had him we agreed that we will teach him about Catholicism, but only when he's old enough to grasp the concepts.

If at that time he chooses to follow it, meaning baptism and the rest, I'm happy to let him but we won't indoctrinate our kid. Indoctrination is robbing free will and I don't wish that on anyone much less my boy.

My 13 year old stepson goes to a small, ultra-conservative Baptist school and is taught from a Christian "science" textbook. Everything in that book relates to God and there is an entire section about the "myth" of evolution and why creationism is right. I was absolutely appalled when I saw this, but unfortunately, he lives with his mother (who also teaches at the school...and they go to church there) and there's no way we could get him out of that school. I can only hope to teach him some real science through discussion at our house.

Oh wow, that's just so wrong on so many levels.
